Black History Month Activities

Black History Month Activities

Black History Month is almost over, but there is still time to celebrate it in your classroom! We have put together some of our favourite Black History themed activities for you to try in your classroom.

Black History Poems

If you want to approach the theme from a literacy angle, there are so many poems about Black History and the experiences of Black people. You could read, examine and perform these in your classroom.

Create a poster for a Black History Icon

There are so many people that have made waves for the Black community over the years, your pupils could choose the person they are most inspired by and create their very own poster/display all about them and their achievements.

Create a timeline

The Black History struggle goes back hundreds or years, and every part of the timeline is important to understanding the movement today. You could create a timeline on your classroom wall of significant  events in the movement.

Watch a film

This may feel like a lazy way of teaching a subject, but sometimes the most moving and impactful way of learning the history is by watching it. There are so many great films, short films and TV series to choose from depending on which subject you would like to focus on.

Make a virtual visit

You might not be able to visit some of the worldwide museums and exhibitions about Black History, but alot of them offer virtual visits and resources these days. You can visit the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem  right from your classroom.

We hope you can use these activities to enhance your classroom this Black History Month! Don't forget Black History is not just for one month, it can be celebrated anytime!
