It is Road Safety Week in the UK! This week aims to highlight the dangers of the roads and raise awareness about how to stay safe. Over 1,700 people lose their lives on UK roads each year, while another 30,000 sustain life-changing injuries. It is absolutely crucial that we stay educated and cautious near roads.
In this blog post, we will explore some useful road signs and share tips to help you stay safe!
Red Standing Man
This means stand and wait behind the marked line whilst the vehicles and bikes past through.
Green Crossing Man
This means you can cross but still- STOP LOOK AND LISTEN in case there are still vehicles passing. You will also hear a high pitched beep along with the green signal.
Zebra Crossing
Here, cars should stop and allow pedestrians to cross. Unfortunately not everyone does this or stops in time, so be extra cautious and always look left and right before crossing.
Lollipop Lady
Your school may have a Lollipop Lady! These people help both pedestrians and vehicles during busy times on the road. When the Lollipop Lady gives her signal to you, it will be safe to cross.
Top Tips!!
- Never play or be silly near a road.
- Always stop, look left and right, and listen.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing.
- Never assume drivers will stop!
- If you’re riding something like a scooter or bike, always wear a helmet.
- Don’t cross a road whilst using your phone.
