It’s almost time for Mindfulness May! At Konflux Theatre, we thought we would share a few ideas on how to introduce Mindfulness to children both at home and at school.

What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness
/ˈmʌɪn(d)f(ʊ)lnəs/

‘The quality or state of being conscious or aware of something’

In its most basic form, mindfulness is the skill of focusing on whatever is happening in any given moment. We have found some simple activities that can help incorporate this practise in to a daily routine.

Mindful Walks
Not only is this a way to encourage physical activity in children, it’s a great way to begin practising mindfulness. Ask children to focus on something they may not have noticed before. What can they smell? What can they hear? What can they see? How does it make them feel?

Mindfulness Jars
Fill some old jars with water and pour in some glitter. After making sure the jar is securely shut (we don’t want any glitter explosions!), ask pupils to shake the jar and describe what they see and hear as the glitter swirls and settles. This is a fun and easy activity that will also make great decorations for the classroom!

Mindfulness Apps
For pupils more drawn to technology, there are many brilliant apps available full to the brim with different interactive activities on mindfulness and meditation! Headspace for Kids explore five main themes in their ‘Meditation for Kids’ – Calm, Focus, Kindness, Sleep & Wake Up.

‘It’s almost as though meditation was designed for kids. They just ‘get it’ – there is this elasticity and freedom in their minds which allows them to be present in the moment and free from any external thoughts or pressures. By introducing meditation and mindfulness at an early age, not only can we build on this and help nurture their mind development, but we are also making meditation simple and accessible.’
Andy Puddicombe, Co-Founder of Headspace
